Princess Cheung-ping

Synopsis of Princess Cheung-ping

In 1644, the seventeenth year of the reign of Ming Emperor Tsung-ching (Chongzhen), Princess Cheung-ping exchanged vows of love and commitment with Chow Sai-heen under the entwined tree. Before long the capital fell into the hands of the rebels. The Emperor had his empress, concubine and daughters killed to avoid humiliation. Cheung-ping barely escaped death and secluded herself in a nunnery. Soon the rebels were expelled by the Manchus, who took over the Chinese throne and captured the crown prince of the Ming. A year later, Cheung-ping ran into Sai-heen, who visited the nunnery by chance. As the couple prepared for their reunion, the news broke that the Manchu court had been searching for Cheung-ping.

Act 1: Vows under the Entwined Tree

At the order of her father, the Ming Emperor, Princess Cheung-ping held a banquet to pick her groom. Chow Sai-heen was selected for his wit and talent. They exchanged vows of love and commitment under the entwined tree.

Act 2: Princess in Distress

Soon the capital fell into the hands of the rebels. The Emperor had his wife, concubine, and daughters killed before taking his own life. Cheung-ping was saved by Chow Chung, a senior minister.

Act 3: Plea for the Princess

Before long the Manchus expelled the rebels and took over the Chinese throne, founding the Qing Dynasty. Chow Chung and his son Po-lun wanted to report Cheung-ping to the new court for their own gain. Contemptuous of her father and brother’s plot, Chow Sui-lan helped Cheung-ping escape to a nunnery and spread the rumour of her suicide. Sai-heen came to plead for the body of his fiancee but left heartbroken.

Act 4: Encounter at the Nunnery

A year later, Cheung-ping and San-heen ran into each other at the nunnery and pledged a reunion. Chow Chung learned the truth and wanted to interfere. Sai-heen seized the opportunity and promised him to persuade Cheung-ping to surrender.

Act 5: Petition to the New Court

Seeing Sai-heen and Chow Chung arrive with a team of royal escorts, Cheung-ping thought she had been tricked and betrayed once again and was overwhelmed by anger and disappointment. Sai-heen requested the retreat of all others before explaining his plan to Cheung-ping. Then she agreed and wrote a petition to the new emperor.

Act 6: Demise of the Princess

At court Sai-heen rebuked with the new emperor and read the petition aloud, followed by Cheung-ping’s tearful plea. Their request for an imperial burial and the crown prince’s release was eventually answered. On the wedding night, Sai-heen and Cheung-ping tied their knot before taking their lives for the vanished empire.
